The VN Group A was a special run of Commodores to hom*ologate the car for racing. They're now collectable and worth $37,000-$45,000 depending on condition, kilometres etc.

However, only 137 cars were built (this number does not include the original concept car), sold only in Australia and New Zealand (only three cars were exported to NZ).

History. Holden and Tom Walkinshaw Racing – an operation owned by Scottish racing-car driver and entrepreneur Tom Walkinshaw – established Holden Special Vehicles (HSV) as a joint venture in 1987.

The 'last' Holden Commodore manufactured in Australia sells for $750,000 at auction. A bidder has paid $750,000 for "the last car ever produced at Holden Australia" — even though General Motors says "absolutely the last Holden" is on display at the National Motor Museum in Birdwood, South Australia.

The most recent example of a 1985 Holden Commodore VK SS Group A to go under the hammer and fetch big money was Peter Brock's personal road car – and build number 005. That example sold last year for $1.057 million (excluding auction fees), which is believed to be price record for a Holden road car.

This is not just any Commodore but a super-rare HSV GTS-R W1, the fastest and most powerful car ever built in Australia. Holden reportedly had about a thousand people in the queue to buy one — despite the $170,000 RRP — but only 300 are being made.

HSV's 6.2-litre supercharged V8 GTS is the quickest Australia production car in history – and it's official. The Walkinshaw-owned Holden performance offshoot today confirmed 0-100km/h acceleration figures for the GTS. It claims a 4.4sec sprint for both the six-speed manual and automatic versions of 430kW 740Nm GTS.

The switch to a larger capacity V8 for the regular Holden range also leaves HSV with supercharging as the only option for its range of high-performance VF Commodores.

The Holden Commodore / Chevy SS was built on the GM Zeta platform and came in a front-engine, RWD layout. Body styles offered for the Holden Commodore included a two-door coupe, a four-door sedan, and a five-door station wagon.

Holden was founded in 1856 as a saddlery manufacturer in South Australia. In 1898, it moved into the automotive field. It became a subsidiary of the United States–based General Motors (GM) in 1931, when the company was renamed General Motors-Holden's Ltd.

The next-generation Commodore will also be sold as a road car in the US as a Chevrolet SS. The next-gen Holden Commodore will be sold in the United States. Holden will export its big sedan to North America, in reasonably grunty form, to be re-badged as the Chevrolet SS.

It was HSV's first 'Cross Trac' all-wheel drive model, and was reasonably quick with a 0-100km/h time of 6.5sec. But the Avalanche's heavy weight, Touring suspension and abysmal fuel consumption – courtesy of a 270kW/475Nm 5.7-litre V8 and four-speed auto – meant only 300 examples were ever sold.

Inside were sports front seats, electric windows, audio upgrade six-speaker stereo, individually numbered instrument panel badge, HSV logo embossed gear knob with leather trim and the HSV vanity pack. Just 180 VS-model Mantas were produced in total, almost all sedans, however six wagons were also made to special order.

An additional two were built after the first four, but it's our understanding they weren't sanctioned by HSV. While HSV built all 295 GTSR W1 sedans (275 for Australia and 20 for New Zealand, plus three production pilots), the four W1 Maloo utes were engineered and built by Walkinshaw Performance.

Just 50 were made in black, 25 in yellow and 25 in red, followed by a further 70 GTO Signature series all in Sting Red and these have become arguably the most collectible two-door HSVs produced.
