How Long to Cook Sliced Potatoes in the Air Fryer

This is going to depend on the make and model of your air fryer and the thickness of the potatoes.

If they’re sliced to ¼-inch thickness, it should only take about 15 minutes to get super crispy potato slices in the air fryer.

You want the outsides to be crunchy and golden-brown while the insides should be melt-in-your-mouth soft.

If they aren’t quite crispy enough, let them keep cooking for another minute or two.

Tips for the Best Air Fryer Sliced Potatoes

  • Ensure the potato slices are evenly coated in the oil and seasoning mix to maximize flavor and get the best results.
  • Lay the potato slices in the air fryer in as close to a single layer as possible. A little overlap is okay.
  • Always flip the potatoes halfway through the cooking time so they can crisp up on all sides as the hot air circulates.
  • Serve air fried potato slices right away! You want them to be hot and crispy right out of the fryer.
  • To store leftover potato slices, let them cool to room temperature, then transfer to an airtight container. They’ll stay fresh in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Reheat sliced potatoes in the air fryer at 380 degrees F until crispy and heated all the way through.

Why are my potatoes still hard in air fryer? ›

Don't Overcrowd: Avoid overloading the air fryer basket to allow proper air circulation and ensure crispiness. What happens if you don't soak potatoes before frying? ›

The main reasons to cut the potatoes and pre-soak in water are: To allow the excess starches and sugars to be removed from the outer surface of the fry strips AND to keep the potatoes from browning prematurely from exposure to air. Covering in water helps the potato from turning a dark color.

Should I rinse sliced potatoes before frying? ›

By rinsing off the excess starch, you can achieve a better balance and control over the browning process, resulting in evenly cooked and beautifully golden fries. Another advantage of rinsing the potatoes is that the cold water makes the potato cells firmer, leading to crispier fries when fried.

Why do my potatoes not get crispy in the air fryer? ›

Don't forget to give the potatoes a thorough wash/scrub. Avoid Cooking Spray – Aersol cooking sprays will damage the coating of your air fryer basket. Cold water is used because hot water would react with the starch activating it, making it harder to separate from the potatoes.

How long can potatoes soak in water before frying? ›

Just a quick 15-30 minute soak in water does the trick if you're in a rush, though if you are planning ahead you can let the sliced russets or yes, even sweet potatoes, bathe for hours or even overnight before draining, drying, and frying them up.
