England axe Marcus Rashford from Euro 2024 squad – with five uncapped players on long list
Gareth Southgate has axed Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson from his England training squad for Euro 2024 as he has given call-ups to young and in-form players.
The uncapped Liverpool duo of Jarell Quansah and Curtis Jones are in a 33-man party along with Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite and Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton, who began 2024 as a Championship player with Blackburn.
Henderson, who was England vice-captain and who has won 81 caps, has not missed a major tournament since the 2010 World Cup but has had a difficult season, first joining Al-Ettifaq and then leaving after six months to sign for Ajax. Southgate had remained loyal to both the midfielder and forward Rashford as they have struggled at club level until taking the dramatic decision to drop both.
Rashford, who has been in England’s last four major tournament squads, including all three under Southgate, has not started a match since last month’s FA Cup semi-final and has only scored eight goals for Manchester United and lost out to wingers who have had better seasons.
Cole Palmer, the second-highest scorer in the Premier League, Jarrod Bowen, who got 20 goals in all competitions for West Ham, and Anthony Gordon were all preferred. Jack Grealish, who has lost his place in the Manchester City side, was also chosen ahead of Rashford.

Scotland’s Euro 2024 squad: Who’s on the plane to Germany?
After ending their men’s major tournament drought three years ago, Scotland will hope for an improved showing as they take their place at Euro 2024 this summer.
Steve Clarke’s side reached a second European Championships in a row after making a brilliant start to their qualifying campaign, which included wins over Spain at Hampden and Norway in Oslo, finishing second in their group to secure an automatic qualification spot.
Now the Tartan Army will travel in their thousands as Scotland head to Germany, after they were knocked out of Euro 2020 finals in the group stages and without a win three years ago.
Despite drawing against England at Wembley, Scotland were beaten by the Czech Republic and Croatia at Hampden - but Clarke’s side will hope to be more competitive this time around.
They will open the tournament against hosts Germany in Munich on June 14, before facing Switzerland and Hungary in Group A. Before then, Clarke will announce his 26-player squad for the Euros on Wednesday May 22, as excitment builds ahead of a second major tournament in three years.

Netherlands Euro 2024 squad: Who makes Ronald Koeman’s preliminary list?
The Netherlands will be looking for a significant run in Euro 2024, having not reached the quarter-finals since 2008.
Having not won the tournament since 1988, when manager Ronald Koeman was a player, the Netherlands reached the quarter-finals of the last World Cup, having not qualified for the previous edition in Russia.
After finishing third in the 2014 World Cup, the Netherlands went on a barren spell at international events, and did not qualify for the 2016 Euros either, but since then the side have improved and won all three of their group games in 2020, before being knocked out by the Czech Republic.
Koeman will be hoping to inspire his side and rediscover the form that saw them beat Italy and Croatia in the Nations League semi-finals. France, Poland and Austria await in Group D, but France got the better of the Netherlands twice in the qualifying rounds for the tournament.
Virgil van Dijk and Nathan Ake hold experience of top level football, while Jeremie Frimpong is an exciting talent having excelled at Bayer Leverkusen this season with 14 goals and 12 assists for Xabi Alonso’s unbeaten Bundesliga champions.

Portugal confirm Euro 2024 squad as Cristiano Ronaldo leads star-studded team
Cristiano Ronaldo is set to play at a sixth European Championship after the 39-year-old was included in Portugal’s squad for Euro 2024.
It means Ronaldo will play at the Euros 20 years on from his tournament debut at Euro 2004, and have the chance to add to his record 14 goals at the championships.
The Al-Nassr forward joins a star-studded squad named by Roberto Martinez, with Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rafael Leao, Diogo Jota, Joao Felix and Goncalo Ramos all offering considerable attacking firepower.
Portugal won the Euros for the first time in 2016 and will be favourites to qualify as winners of Group F, with Turkey, Czech Republic and Georgia their opponents in Germany.
Veteran defender Pepe, meanwhile, is also included and is set to play at the European Championships at the age of 41.

France Euro 2024 squad: Who makes confirmed 25 named by Didier Deschamps?
It’s been 24 years since France were champions of Europe, but Les Bleus edge England as the standout favourites ahead of Euro 2024.
Didier Deschamps has named a star-studded squad headlined by Kylian Mbappe and backed by plenty of major tournament experience after winning the World Cup in 2018 and reaching the Qatar final in 2022.
France will be out to go one better after their defeat to Argentina on penalties, which was also how they were beaten at the last Euros. France were the favourites then, too, but were stunned by Switzerland in the last-16.
France will face the Netherlands, Austria and Poland in a competitive Group D. As well as Mbappe, Antoine Griezmann, Olivier Giroud and N’Golo Kante are among those who remain from the 2018 World Cup winning side.
There are plenty of fresh additions, though, with Arsenal centre-back William Saliba and Real Madrid duo Eduardo Camavinga and Aurlien Tchouameni reflecting the deep pool of talent available to Deschamps.
France should go far and another clash with England potentially looms following their thrilling meeting in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals.

Germany Euro 2024 squad: Who makes Julian Nagelsmann’s preliminary list?
Hosts Germany will look to triumph on home soil at Euro 2024 this summer.
The three-time European champions have underperformed at recent major tournaments, exiting the last two World Cups in the group stages and only reaching last-16 of Euro 2020, where they lost to England at Wembley three years ago.
But Julian Nagelsmann will be out to revive the spirits of the home nation and recent victories over France and the Netherlands in friendly matches was a sign that Germany will be among the contenders for the title this summer.
Scotland, Switzerland and Hungary await in Group A, with Germany kicking off the Euros against the Scots in Munich on June 13.
Nagelsmann’s squad has been bolstered by Bayer Leverkusen’s remarkable unbeaten Bundesliga triumph, with star Florian Wirtz named player of the year in the German top-flight.
The 21-year-old star adds to a number of national team stalwarts who remain from Germany’s World Cup triumph in 2014, with Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer joined by the returning Toni Kroos, who is back from international retirement.

Gareth Southgate explains Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson omissions from Euro 2024 squad
Gareth Southgate has explained the reasons behind Marcus Rashford and Jordan Henderson’s ommissions from the England training squad for Euro 2024 after turning to young and in-form players.
Southgate has previously remained loyal to both the midfielder and forward despite struggles at club level.
But after naming a 33-man squad ahead of this summer’s tournament in Germany, Southgate has made the “difficult” decision to cut the experienced pair.
“These are, of course, difficult calls, talking about players who are very good players, who have been an important part of what we’ve done for a number of years,” Southgate explained.
“With Marcus, I just feel other players in that area of the pitch have had better seasons, it’s as simple as that.”

Marcus Rashford sends message to Gareth Southgate after being cut from England squad
Marcus Rashford wished Gareth Southgate and England “all the best” at Euro 2024 after the Manchester United forward was left out of the squad for the tournament this summer.
Rashford was a shock omission from Southgate’s 33-player training squad announced on Tuesday afternoon, which will be trimmed to the allocated 26 players by June 8 ahead of the Euros.
The 26-year-old has represented England at the last four major international tournaments but has suffered a difficult season on the pitch this term, scoring just eight goals in all competitions for United.
It represented a significant drop-off from his 30-goal campaign the previous year, with Southgate admitting that other forwards, such as Chelsea’s Cole Palmer, Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon and West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen, have had” better seasons”.

The biggest omissions from England’s Euro 2024 squad: Nick Pope
The Newcastle goalkeeper’s form last season saw him tipped to challenge Jordan Pickford for England’s starting spot at the World Cup, but has been missing since December due to a dislocated shoulder. Dean Henderson and James Trafford are included in the training squad instead, along with Aaron Ramsdale.

The biggest omissions from England’s Euro 2024 squad: Dominic Solanke
The striker could not have done much more after scoring a sensational 19 goals in the Premier League for Bournemouth this term, but Harry Kane, Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins are heading to Germany as Southgate’s more established options. Tough luck, I guess.
